Counselor/Patient Educator
 
Job Description:

Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood of Kansas & Mid-Missouri has a tremendous opportunity for a Counselor/Patient Educator in Overland Park, Kansas.  This position is full time position and hourly with 37.5 hours per week schedule.   The hours are Tuesday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, 7 a.m. – 2 p.m.


JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for providing patients with education, consultation and screenings concerning reproductive healthcare in a comfortable, unbiased, non-judgmental, and confidential setting.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.



  • Review completed charts for compliance with agency protocols and procedures;

  • Help the client come to an independent decision about which choice is right for her;

  • Dispense accurate information about the procedures including the risks and benefits;

  • Obtain informed consent on all procedures; accurately complete all necessary paperwork in conjunction with planned procedure involvement;

  • Provide referrals to other health organizations/agencies with documents, brochures and handouts;

  • Provide informed consent counseling to ensure that the client understands and agrees to her medical care and that the client makes voluntary decisions in the absence of coercion;

  • Provide support to administrative and client services;

Provide appointment scheduling and receptionist backup;
 
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Minimum education and experience required.



  • Associates degree or six months to one year related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • One year experience in a healthcare or social service setting that focused on client or customer service.

Preferred education and experience



  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, social services, or psychology.

  • Two or more years experience in counseling particularly in a healthcare setting.

Comprehensive Health of Planned Parenthood Kansas and Mid-Missouri is an Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Center located in Overland Park, Kansas. This full time (37.5 hrs/wk) position for a Surgical RN will be part of our team-oriented staff providing reproductive surgical services to the women of Kansas and Missouri.  This the workdays for this position are:  Tuesday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Saturday,
7 a.m. – 2 p.m.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY: Carry out physician orders regarding patient care. Perform nursing duties in patient assessment, surgery, and recovery. Start IV for patient sedation and emergencies. Monitor patients in recovery (medical and emotional). Facilitate dispensing of medications, birth control and controlled substances as directed by a physician. Perform a variety of basic laboratory testing. Educate patients regarding post-operative instructions, contraception, and follow-up exams. Follow-up on patient abnormal laboratory test results. Assist in maintaining emergency procedures, equipment and supplies. Evaluate, screen and refer to physician or clinician post-abortion complications. Scheduling flexibility required.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Commitment to the philosophy and goals of Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri.  Licensed Registered Nurse in state of Kansas required. Preferred: Two years experience in surgical setting and ACLS, bilingual in Spanish.
